On the occasion of Eritrea's independence celebrations on May 24, the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra visitied Asmara, supported by the Goethe Institut.
With conducter Prof Michael Köhler 35 members of the orchestra travelled to Eritrea for the very first time in order to play two concerts in Asmara. On May 24, the Eritrean Independence Day, the orchestra performed live at the stadium in front of thousands of guests - among them government representatives and diplomats as well as Asmara's youth. With classical pieces like the Waltz and the Radetzky Marsh from Johann Strauss (father and son), the orchestra was abel to inspire its entire audience.Enlarge image
On the evening of May 25, 2015, an additional concert was played in the classical Asmara Theatre. In a two-hours performance including a solo from the Aria of Verdi that was performed by Eritrean opera singer Barnabas Mebrahtu, international classical music could be presented to the audience of Asmara. Pieces like Sinfonia Nr 2 from Ludwig van Beethoven and excerpts from John Williams' “Schindlers List” found favour among the audience in the theatre as well the Eritrean diaspora worldwide - thanks to a live broadcasting by ERI TV.
